Willy Messerschmitt started conceptual design of the HA-300 in Germany in the 50s, detailed design was taken over by Hispano Aviacion in Spain.
In 1960 the project was sold to Egypt and continued with Messerschmitt acting as technical director. The first of three prototypes flew in 1964.

It was obtained from Egypt by EADS in 1991 and was restored at Manching between 1993 and 1996.
